Do you know about City Design?
No, seriously, do you know how to design cities?
Well, “City Design” covers four topics:
- Architecture including landscape architecture;
- Place branding and city marketing;
- City building and urban planning;
- Urban geography and urban sociology.
City Design answers such questions as why some cities are built up horizontally?
While other cities grow up vertically.
The important role in studying “City Design” is assigned not only to cities, but also to citizens.
It is crucial to understand that cities' population is increasing.
It is even more crucial to understand why cities' population is increasing.
Why some cities rise much faster?
For instance, Mumbai or Mexico City.
And what is agglomeration?
City Design tells about cities that prospered and became rich.
For example, Venice.
The economic growth of Venice in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries happened due to dominating Mediterranean commerce.
Also City Design describes cities that fell into decay.
As in case of Detroit, where many factories of car manufacturers were located.
And the city was a large automotive center.
However, in the fifties the city declined in population.
In the sixties there were financial worries and high unemployment.
Finally the oil crisis of the eighties resulted in the city failure.
Lack of knowledge in city design can lead to serious mistakes.
Let’s consider citizens of Troy, the city of the ancient Near East.
One day the people of Troy said:
“Wow, such a large beautiful Greek horse”
And without studying city design they decided to place the horse inside the city.
So that destroyed not only the outward appearance of the city, but also the city itself.
One more example.
The city of Babylon.
And the construction of the Tower of Babel where calculations went wrong and the building crashed.
So disregarding city design and architecture principles caused all people to speak different languages.
These and other cases you will learn by entering the City Design online course at stepic.org/city.
